Mrs. Elizabeth Sheppard Brown
One of Connellsvilles oldest Residents died last night. One of the oldest and most prominent inhabitants of Connellsville died Tuesday night at 11 o'clock in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth Sheppard Brown, widow of John K. Brown, who died May 24, 1894. Mrs. Brown had been failing for some months, but, succumbed after an illness of only five hours.
Elizabeth Sheppard was born on the site of the Catholic Parsonage on the corner of Prospect Street and Orchard Alley, April 24, 1820. She was the daughter of Theophilus and Elizabeth Stafford Sheppard, whose Mother was a descendant of General Warren of Revolutionary War fame.
She was married to John K. Brown July 24, 1836, at the age of 16. She was the mother of 14 children, seven sons and seven daughters, all of whom except the oldest was born in the Brown home on Main Street, where they have lived for 65 years. Four daughters and three sons survive her, as do also 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Her children were Theodore M, deceased, Mrs. Artemesia S. Cameron, Joseph K of Dunkirk, Ind; Fielding D, deceased; Mrs. E. Y. White, Mary Alice, deceased; George B, Mrs D.J. Baer, Osborne, Ohio: William B and Elza Eva, Cora A and Albert C, deceased.
Mrs. Brown was originally a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, but left that body in 1832 when the Methodist Protestant denomination was organized and has been an active member of the latter ever since. She took part in different church societies and was widely known for her active interest in and benevolence toward all deserving charities.
Her home was the stopping place of Ministers and their families and she loved to entertain any and all who could tell her of the progress of her church, as well as the news of the day. Her room is filled with furniture and relics of old families, every article possessing some historical interest, such as a chair which was once in the possession of Zachariah Connell. She celebrated her golden wedding anniversary with her husband in 1886. |
